For the Feast of St. John the Apostle

The first is a brief talk about the Feast of Saint John the Apostle–which is today–and the second is the movie The Gospel of John, a critically acclaimed movie about the life of Christ, which is based on the aforementioned Gospel.

A Prayer to Saint John the Evangelist

greco1

Prayer to St. John the Evangelist

O Glorious Saint John, you were so loved by Jesus that you merited to rest your head upon his breast, and to be left in his place as a son to Mary. Obtain for us an ardent love for Jesus and Mary. Let me be united with them now on earth and forever after in heaven.
Litany to St. John the Evangelist

(Composed by Fr. Joepel Padit for St. John the Evangelist Parish)

St. John, Apostle of the Lord
St. John, Beloved of Jesus
St. John, Guardian Son of Mary
St. John, You did not abandon the Lord in Calvary
Lead us to Jesus
Help us to love Jesus
Make us honor and love Mary

Strengthen us in our faith in God

St. John, You died in your heart with Jesus on the cross
and when you gave
His lifeless body to Mother Mary

Never let us be separated from our Lord

St. John, You are The Evangelist
St. John, Our Patron
St. John, Our Patron
St. John, Our Patron
Teach us to know and serve the Lord
Protect us from the evil one
Inspire us in our daily life
Intercede for us always

Amen.

Hymn: Exsultet orbis

Now let the earth with joy resound,
And heaven the chant re-echo round;
Nor heaven nor earth too high can raise
The great Apostle’s glorious praise.

O ye who, throned in glory dread,
Shall judge the living and the dead,
Lights of the world forevermore!
To you the suppliant prayer we pour.

Ye close the sacred gates on high;
At your command apart they fly:
O loose for us the guilty chain
We strive to break, and strive in vain.

Sickness and health your voice obey;
At your command they go or stay:
From sin’s disease our souls restore;
In good confirm us more and more.

So when the world is at its end,
And Christ to Judgment shall descend,
May we be called those joys to see
Prepared from all eternity.

All honor, laud, and glory be,
O Jesu, Virgin-born, to thee;
All glory, as is ever meet,
To Father and to Paraclete. Amen.
