Buddhism

Buddhist concepts have made their way into a lot of the posts I’ve written here.  Over the past few months, I have written three posts dealing directly with Buddhism as the main topic.  I have ideas for several others, too.  I therefore decided that I need to have a dedicated index page for Buddhist topics.  Some articles will still be cross-indexed elsewhere, but this will be a one-stop-shop for specifically Buddhist topics.

Science and Technology: Index

Many posts I’ve done here have touched on science or technology or related issues.  To date, the primary focus of these posts has generally been on other issues, generally related to pop-culture.  Recently, though, I wrote a post dealing with aliens from a purely scientific perspective, without bringing pop-culture into the mix.  Individual posts have a way of getting lost over time, as the total number of posts increases.  Thus, I’ve decided to start yet another index for strictly science-related posts, as well as for those with a heavily science-oriented content.  Enjoy!

Church, Churches, and Church History: Index

Recently I’ve been posting on Apostolic Succession and church history in general.  I thought about putting those posts under “Religious Miscellany“; but those posts are more general in nature, and cover religions other than Christianity.  I decided it would be worthwhile to add a new index for such posts, which are more specifically about Christianity, the Church, and church history.  Therefore, though I’ve written quite a lot about religion here over the years, this will be my most focused and specific index on religious matters.  Enjoy!

Your Own Personal Altar: Index

This index is not actually for religious-oriented stuff, at least not specifically.  I have an ongoing series, Your Own Personal Canon, in which I look at various books, both religious and secular, that have been a big influence in my life.  In a related vein, here I want to look at individuals–men and women–who have been influential to me, or who are personal heroes, or whom I hold in great respect.  I debated what title to give this series.  I thought about something to do with saints; but there will be non-religiously oriented individuals here, and certainly many who are not “official” saints.  I thought about “Hall of Fame”, but that sounds crass.  Finally, I thought of the shrine tables of many cultures on which the images not only of saints, bodhisattvas, deities, and such are placed, but also the images of illustrious ancestors and culture heroes.  Such tables are most accurately described as “shrines”, but they’re often referred to in contemporary discourse as “altars”.  That’s not really correct, since an altar implies a sacrifice; but I decided just to go with it.  Thus, here I will give links to articles on the various worthies about whom I will write in future posts.

This or That: Index

“This or that” is a pop-culture game in which you decide among two possibilities of things in which there is perceived to be a binary–i.e., a “this or that”–choice.  I have done some posts on the “this or that” theme, and lately I’ve had some ideas for others.  Therefore, I’ve decided to give “this or that” its own index.  Whichever alternative you prefer in each of the following posts, enjoy!

Plato or Aristotle?

Egypt or Mesopotamia?

Athens or Jerusalem?

Star Trek or Star Wars?

The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Index

Awhile back I wrote four posts on the series Mystery Science Theater 3000.  I’ve recently decided to writer another post, and more may follow in the future.  Therefore, I’ve decided to make an index page to get them all together in one place.  Enjoy!

MST3K:  The Return

Improved Indexing

1726A slight heads up to a small change I’m making that hopefully will make this blog a little more user-friendly.  I already have a page for the series indices (see above) and a bar with links to the indices to the lower right.  However, a visitor coming on a given post might not know what series (or sometimes what group of series, since some posts are in more than one series) that post belongs to.  Even worse, I will sometimes end a post by saying, “Next time we’ll discuss such-and-such.”  I mean, of course, the next time in that series.  However, many posts and weeks or months may intervene between the current post and the next in its series; and the casual reader would have no way of knowing where that next post is.  I know I’ve been frustrated by this on other blogs.

Therefore, I am beginning to go to each post that is part of a series, and linking to the series index at the bottom of the post.  At this point there will be, in italics, a sentence:  Part of the series X, where X is the name of the series and contains a hyperlink to the proper series index.  Thus, suppose a given post goes up in March and ends with a teaser of the next time, but the next in the series doesn’t go up until September.  Now all one will have to do is to click the link at the bottom to go to the series index; and from there, it will be easy enough to find the next installment in the series, if it’s been published yet.

Obviously, given the large numbers of series and posts I’ve got, this will take awhile.  Some posts, as I said, belong to multiple series and will thus need multiple links.  In this case, I’ll put the main series index link first, followed by any subsidiary or “nested” series.  I expect that it will take several weeks or months to get all posts indexed, so please be patient.  The final results, though, will be worth the efforts, and will make navigating around here substantially easier.  Meanwhile, enjoy the blog!

That is, “It is finished.”

The final “Rubá’í of the Day” went up this past Sunday.  However, I’ve been working behind the scenes to get the index updated.  I completed this just a few minutes ago, and I therefore direct you to the index for the “Rubá’í of the Day” series.  From there you can find all seventy-five verses of Edward Fitzgerald’s translation of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, and all five hundred of E. H. Whinfield’s version.

The “Rubá’í of the Day” series has been a labor of love for me, and I have greatly enjoyed posting it.  I hope you find it interesting and worthwhile, too; and if you have a taste for daily poetry, check out my ongoing “Daily Whitman” series, in which I’m publishing Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass in daily increments.  Farewell to Omar, greetings to Walt, and may you enjoy both!

Taoism

Taijitu_wallpaper_by_randomlamp

I’ve ended up writing more essays on the Tao Te Ching than I’d originally intended over in the “Your Own Personal Canon” series.  Taoism has been an interest of mine for many years, and I may well return to Taoism even after I’ve finished the essays on the Tao Te Ching.  Thus, I thought it would be a good idea to set up yet another index in which to collect the Taoist essays–and here it is!
