A Prayer to Saints Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen
Collect (Opening Prayer) for the Memorial of St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory Nazianzen
O God, who were pleased to give light to your Church by the example and teaching of the Bishops Saints Basil and Gregory, grant, we pray, that in humility we may learn your truth and practice it faithfully in charity. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. (courtesy of here)
This is slightly belated, as their feast day on the Western calendar was yesterday. However, Basil and Gregory Nazianzen were two of the most important theologians in both the Western (Catholic) and Eastern (Orthodox) tradition, and with Basil’s brother, St. Gregory of Nyssa are referred to as the Cappadocian Fathers. They have been enormously influential, and there is reason to believe that they were universalist. May they pray for us all.
