The showers of grape juice, which cupbearers pour,
Quench fires of grief in many a sad heart’s core.
Praise be to Allah, who hath sent this balm
To heal sore hearts, and spirits’ health restore!

Oh burden not thyself with drudgery,
Lord of white silver and red gold to be;
But feast with friends, ere this warm breath of thine
Be chilled in death, and earthworms feast on thee.

Now is the time earth decks her greenest bowers,
And trees, like Musa’s hand, grow white with flowers!
As ’twere at ‘Isa’s breath the plants revive,
While clouds brim o’er, like tearful eyes, with showers.

To step beyond themselves, but dress them fine,
And plot of credit others to despoil.

Quote for the Week

Karl_Weierstrass

… it is true that a mathematician who is not somewhat of a poet, will never be a perfect mathematician.

–Karl Weierstrass, letter to Sofia Kovalevskaya, August 27, 1883, as shared by Gösta Mittag-Leffler at the 2nd International Congress for Mathematicians in Paris. Compte rendu du deuxième Congrès international des mathematiciens tenu à Paris du 6 au 12 août 1900, Gauthier-Villars (Paris), 1902, page 149.  Courtesy of Wikiquote.

Rich men, who take to drink, the world defy
With shameless riot, and as beggars die;
Place in my ruby pipe some emerald hemp,
‘Twill do as well to blind care’s serpent eye.

Proof that Plants Actually Do Talk to Each Other

Plants
Something well worth re-blogging, and fascinating as well.
Scientists: Plants communicate with one another through ‘nanomechanical vibrations’ (via Raw Story )

A study published Tuesday in the scientific journal BMC Ecology reveals that plants are able to communicate with each other even when light, scent and touch have been removed from the equation, leading scientists to speculate that there’s a wholly different mechanism they use to encourage each other…

True I drink wine, like every man of sense,
For I know Allah will not take offense;
Before time was, He know that I should drink,
And who am I to thwart His prescience?
